New Mexico’s Natural Treasures: Help Preserve Our Public Lands

Our wide range of public lands in New Mexico ensures that the Land of Enchantment lives up to its name. We have infinite opportunities to enjoy the great Outdoors. From the Sandia Mountains’ pink sunsets to the Rio Grande’s rushing waters, New Mexico’s open spaces provide adventurers and nature lovers with a fantastic outdoor playground.

Albuquerque’s Outdoor Paradise
Rising strikingly above Albuquerque, the Sandia Mountains provide residents with a unique natural gym. The expansive trail network includes local favorites like La Luz Trail, which rises 3,000 feet through multiple Ecosystems to the 10,378-foot peak. The Elena Gallegos Open Space offers over 24 miles of hiking or mountain biking trails.
The Rio Grande Valley State Park winds through the city’s heart, providing an important riverside habitat and recreational possibilities along the Paseo del Bosque 16-mile Trail. Cyclists, runners, and wildlife watchers enjoy this paved path all year long.

Outside the City Limits
Travel outside Albuquerque to Explore:
• Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, with its distinctive cone-shaped rock formations
• Valles Caldera National Preserve, offers backcountry skiing and elk viewing
• Gila National Forest, is home to ancient cliff dwellings and pristine wilderness areas
• White Sands National Park, features striking gypsum dunes perfect for sledding and photography

The Call for Your Help
These public lands we enjoy face many challenges from climate change, urban development, and increased usage. Preserving these spaces calls for:
• Preventing erosion and protecting sensitive habitats through sustainable trail development
• Facilities improvement of bathrooms, water stations, and accessibility
• Maintaining healthy animal populations via wildlife habitat protection
• Promoting environmental awareness and stewardship with educational programs.
• Increasing funding for education, maintenance, and conservation efforts

Taking Action
Supporting organizations like the Friends of the Sandia Mountains or New Mexico Volunteers for the Outdoors is an excellent way to get involved. These all-volunteer, non-political organizations are dedicated to improving trails, outdoor facilities, and wildlife habitats on public lands around Albuquerque and throughout the state.

Your participation in local trail maintenance events helps ensure our natural treasures remain vibrant for future generations. Whether mountain biking in the foothills, bird watching along the bosque, or hiking ancient paths, every outdoor enthusiast can help preserve New Mexico’s remarkable public lands. The future of our outdoor spaces depends on our actions today.

For example, NMVFO plans 20+ volunteer work projects each year. NMVFO has an upcoming December event to restore the native plants garden at the Visitor Information Center of the Petroglyph National Monument in western Albuquerque. If you volunteer, you’ll get your hands dirty pruning, removing, and transplanting existing plants and planting seeds and new plants. You’ll also remove old signs and install new signs.
